Our South African Rooibos

Each month at English Tea Shop we’re shining a spotlight on one of our wonderful organic ingredients and this month it’s…rooibos. This unique ingredient has an equally unique flavour; it’s rich and full with a slightly nutty, toasted note and hints of sugary caramel. Rooibos (pronounced roy-bos) or otherwise known as redbush, is a versatile tea ingredient, which can be used as a base for many different blends, complimenting stronger ingredients perfectly, due to its pleasant subtle flavour. Here at English Tea Shop, we celebrate Rooibos and all it has to offer!

Origins of Rooibos

Rooibos is native to certain regions of South Africa, and has been grown there for many centuries. Indigenous people have been harvesting the leaves of this broom-like plant to treat ailments for many generations. Rooibos became known globally in the 18th century when a botanist rediscovered the leaves, and in the 20th century rooibos tea was manufactured and drunk as a caffeine-free alternative to traditional tea. During the Second World War the drink took off around Europe as it became difficult to ship in well-known teas from Asia.

Benefits of drinking Rooibos in Tea

Rooibos has been heralded for its health properties for many years, it is naturally caffeine free which makes it a great alternative for those people who want to cut down on their caffeine intake. As such, it is thought to be very relaxing, perfect to warm you up on long winter evenings. In addition to this, it has strong antioxidant properties that can help protect against diseases and lower inflammation. It can also help build strong bones and even aid in weight loss!

How are we sustainably farming Rooibos for our teas?

We source our organic rooibos from South Africa, the area in which the plant is native to. It grows particularly well in this part of the world as it’s supported by the temperate climate, soil and conditions, compared with anywhere else in the world.
