The origins of cocoa

The origins of cocoa can be traced back thousands of years to the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. The cacao tree (Theobroma cacao) is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It is believed that the Olmec civilization, which thrived around 1500 BCE, was the first to cultivate cocoa. The Maya civilization, which followed, further developed the cultivation and processing techniques, using cocoa beans to create a bitter and frothy beverage that played a significant role in their culture and rituals. The Aztecs, who rose to power in the 14th century, adopted cocoa from the Maya and considered it a sacred and valuable commodity. They used cocoa beans as currency and consumed the beverage for its energising and invigorating properties. With the arrival of European explorers in the 16th century, cocoa was introduced to the rest of the world, and its popularity grew. Today, cocoa is cultivated in various regions around the globe.
