Where did the Valentine’s tradition begin?
Love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day has been around since at least the Middle Ages, though cards were not involved until the 16th century.
St Valentine was an early Christian martyr, put to death for his faith, supposedly on February 14. It is believed he performed marriages in secret and perhaps passed notes between imprisoned Christian lovers.
Other origin stories claim the celebration stems from a Roman fertility cult called Lupercalia, which held mid-February match-making rituals.
