Super Turmeric: The Golden Ingredient Behind Our Blend of the Month

Turmeric is difficult to overlook. It colours the cup before you taste it, then brings a gentle earthiness that sits neatly between the warmth of ginger and the freshness of lemongrass.
In our Blend of the Month, Turmeric, Ginger & Lemongrass, each ingredient has a clear role. Turmeric brings depth, ginger adds lift and lemongrass keeps the cup bright. Naturally caffeine-free, it’s an easy blend to return to through the day.

Introducing Turmeric

Turmeric belongs to the same plant family as ginger and cardamom. While its broad green leaves grow above the soil, the golden rhizomes develop below the surface.

These rhizomes take several months to mature. Once ready, farmers carefully lift them from the earth before cleaning and preparing them for use in food, drinks and herbal infusions.

That time beneath the soil matters. Healthy land, careful timing and the experience of the farmer all shape the colour, aroma and flavour of the final ingredient.

Turmeric Benefits in Tea

Turmeric naturally contains curcumin, a plant compound studied for its potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research into its wider effects continues, so it’s best enjoyed as part of a varied, balanced diet rather than viewed as a remedy.

Its everyday appeal is simpler. Turmeric tea offers an easy way to enjoy a familiar ingredient in a cup that feels warming, fresh and uncomplicated.

Sustainable Turmeric Farming

Growing organic turmeric takes patience and careful attention to the soil.

For our small-scale farmers, turmeric can be part of a more diverse farm. Growing it alongside other crops can support biodiversity, make better use of the land and provide several sources of income across the year.

Organic methods such as composting and crop diversification help return valuable matter to the soil without relying on synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. At English Tea Shop, we support farming communities through practical training, planting materials and equipment where needed.

This reflects Prajāva, our philosophy of community. By sharing knowledge and building long-term relationships, we can support more resilient farms while protecting the quality of the ingredients behind every cup.
