Ingredient of the month – Rosehip 🌹

Of all the wonderful organic ingredients in our tea blends, rosehip is one of the most quietly vibrant.

These small, ruby-red fruits bring a naturally sweet, slightly tangy flavour to tea. In the cup, that means a soft berry note with a gentle brightness, the kind of flavour that feels easy to come back to, whether you’re brewing for yourself or pouring for others.

Introducing Rosehip

Rosehip is the fruit that forms just beneath the petals of wild roses after they bloom. The variety most commonly used in tea is Rosa canina, also known as dog rose.

You’ll find Rosehip growing across Europe, parts of Asia and South America, often in open countryside and along wild rose bushes. Once ripened, the fruit is carefully harvested and dried, ready to be blended into herbal infusions.

Its rich colour and rounded flavour make it a natural fit in fruit blends, adding both depth and a gentle sweetness.

Rosehip benefits in tea

Rosehip is widely known for its natural vitamin C content and bright, fruity character. In tea, it brings a light tang that lifts sweeter notes and helps create a more balanced cup.

Naturally caffeine-free, rosehip tea is easy to enjoy at any time of day. It works just as well as a quiet morning brew as it does served after dinner when you want something soft, flavourful and easy to share.

Fun facts

Rosehip has a long place in everyday life.

During World War II, it was widely gathered across the UK and turned into homemade syrup when citrus fruits were scarce. For many families, it became a familiar seasonal ritual, foraged locally and prepared at home.

Despite its delicate appearance, rosehip is surprisingly hardy, often thriving in places where more delicate crops would struggle.

Handy Rosehip

Rosehip is a surprisingly versatile ingredient.

Beyond tea, it’s often made into syrups and cordials, bringing a bright, lightly tangy flavour to drinks and simple desserts. Its vibrant colour also lends itself to plant-based dyes, while rosehip oil is commonly used in skincare for its light, nourishing texture.

A small fruit with a wide range of thoughtful uses.

Sustainable farming

At English Tea Shop, we sustainably source our rosehip from small-scale organic farmers in South Africa who are part of our wider tea-loving community.

Growing ingredients like Rosehip supports crop diversification, helping farmers build more stable incomes while encouraging biodiversity across their land. This approach strengthens farming communities while supporting long-term sustainability, reflecting our commitment to creating shared value from farm to cup.
