Discovering Speciality Ingredients: Fruitful Fennel

Fennel is a flowering plant from the carrot family which also includes celery and parsley. It is popular due to its liquorice-like flavour and multitude of health benefits. It is most commonly found in the Mediterranean region, but due to its popularity and hardiness, it can now be found in many different parts of the world including our very own Sri Lanka.

Fennel is particularly interesting as the entire plant is edible, from the bulb and stalk to its leaves and seeds, it can be often found in our delicious traditional Sri Lankan curry recipes along with cumin and coriander.

Fennel tea aids healthy digestion and bloating which is why it is such an important ingredient in our Mama Me tea, making the ingredient very popular with our master blender.  Fennel has also been linked to aiding weight loss as well as protecting the respiratory system, detoxifying the body, balancing hormone levels, and boosting libido.

In its raw form, fennel is an excellent source of vitamin C which is essential to collagen production. Collagen is the support system of the skin protecting it from damage caused by environmental factors and also works to smooth the appearance of the skin, making it a vital ingredient to nourish from the inside and out.
